ФЕНОМЕНИ СПІВЧУТТЯ ТА МИЛОСЕРДЯ: КОРЕЛЯЦІЯ СМИСЛІВ

Abstract
The article is dedicated to the problem of elucidating the nature of the sociocultural phenomena of mercy and compassion, as well as determining the way they tend to get related to each other. The significance of the phenomena of mercy and compassion in the contemporary conditions of society development lies in their powerful integration potential, which envisages the possibility of going beyond one’s own selfish interests towards another person as an individual. First, the author briefly defines the concept of «suffering» that underlies compassion. In the analysis of the phenomenon of compassion, the author relies in particular on the ideas elaborated by M. Berdiayev, K.S. Lewis, V.S. Solovyov, B. Spinoza, M. de Unamuno, A. Schopenhauer. Further, based on the researchers’ ideas, the author correlates the phenomena of mercy and compassion. In general, the phenomena of compassion and mercy have been considered from a philosophical point of view, in connection with other phenomena, the latter including: sympathy, pity, altruism, beneficence, etc. The author comes to the conclusion of the possibility to correlate the sociocultural phenomena of mercy and compassion according to «objects», bases and forms of their manifestation, as well as the «center» of action. The «center» within the framework of the phenomenon of compassion is the very suffering of another person; in the context of the phenomenon of mercy, the «center» of action is another human being as an individual. Mercy appears as the manifestation of the activity of compassion, which involves an activity aspect, aimed at the participation in someone's life, service to another person.
