SHOLOM ALEICHEM, FRANZ KAFKA AND REB NACHMAN OF BRESLOV: A DIALOGUE

Abstract
Sholom Aleichem is not considered to be the classic that was interested with Hasidi sm, unlike Yitshok Leybush Peretz, the founder of the neo -Hasidic literature. Nevertheless, it seemsremarkable that his story “The Pair” has a lot in common with Reb Nach man ’s parable “Th e Turk ey P rince ”. Reb Nach man tells o f two humans who behaved like and believed themselves to be turkeys and Sholom Aleichem describes two turkeys that are far more human than the people surrounding them and that believe themselves to be much more than simple fowl . Kafka raises the same questions of possible human-ani mal a mbiguity in the story “A R eport for an Acade my ”, about an ape, which turned human by assiduous mi ming o f hu man wa ys. This story could have been written under the influence of Sholom-Aleichem
