ОБРАЗИ СВЯТИХ ВОЇНІВ У ПРАВОСЛАВНОМУ ІКОНОПИСІ

Abstract

Bohomolets O. Icons of Holy Warriors in the Orthodox Iconography. The article explores the origins of the cult of holy warriors images and proved that their veneration in Christianity, on the one hand, associated with the development of Christian doctrine by the apostles and Fathers of the Church, and on the other - the biblical story of creation, the fall of man and the inherent to Christian geocentrism idea of fight of the divine and devils. Despite the fact that the Christian community was seen as a manifestation of God's kingdom on earth, it is even more than the heavenly Jerusalem was in need of protection, as affirmed in the seat of the ousted from heaven Lucifer. Heavenly patron and protector of the Christian community were primarily soldiers who fought during the life of the faith and the Church of Christ. It was revealed that the iconography of holy warriors lined up in a straight line depending on the features of their lives. In particular, those holy warriors (for example, Ivan the Warrior), who had died a natural death in old age, were written in knight armor, in the form of separate praying images or multycharacter compositions without addition of a large number of secondary symbols. Meanwhile, the holy warriors, who died a martyr's death (St. George the Victorious, Nikita Martyr, Theodore Stratelates, Tryphon, and others.), usually were written in the form of a rider on a white horse, which symbolizes their bond with Christ for the approval of "the holy city" on the ground. Among other things, illuminated the symbolic meaning of the horse image in iconography, as well as explicated the content of the images of holy warriors in different social strata.
