Daneliuk A. Melnychuk M. The Existential Dimensions of Tourism. The article is dedicated to the analysis of tourism concept in the modern philosophical discourse. Philosophy of tourism is defined as a particular branch of philosophical investigation; it has high theoretical potential and demonstrates its effectiveness on different methodological levels. The authors study the concept of tourism in two dimensions: as a social-cultural phenomenon, on one hand, and as a philosophical category, on the other hand. There are reviewed the strengths and drawbacks of the approaches. In the social-cultural context, the concept of tourism lacks a worldview perspective and regards a person as an object of tourism industry. A tourist is a social role for a person to reach certain realization level, the latter means following a particular scenario. Tourism as a philosophical category is considered in the context of the existential perspective of a person making choices and being involved in the creative process on his or her own, while travelling. In the existential dimension of tourism, the person becomes the subject of travelling, but this approach suggests a bit too wide idea of tourism, as it is oriented at the multi-dimensional essence of a human sole. It interferes with defining the concept of tourist, so the existential dimensions of tourism cannot be actualized to the full in the scientific discourse. In the article there is also regarded the worldview-related link between travelling and philosophy, in the context of tourism existential analysis, as well as transformation taking place in the modern mode of travelling, the latter viewed through consumer society values. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the correlation between leisure and tourism, in the context of the notions of activeness and passivity. It is defined that the essence of a journey lies within the complex of non-formalized moment fixed in the concepts of awaiting, lack of activity, emptiness.
