Finite Element Modeling of Fracture Failure in Composite Materials

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 10

Abstract

A Finite Element (FE) model is developed to predict the crack propagation in mode I and mode II tests. The progressive mode I and mode II delamination failures in unidirectional and multidirectional composite laminates are investigated by performing FE simulations. The cohesive zone approach is utilized to develop the numerical model of composite laminates. Composite laminates composed of carbon fibers in epoxy resin are investigated numerically under different load conditions and the effects of fiber orientation on fracture resistance of composite laminates are established.
