FINITE ELEMENT MODELLING OF DEFORMATION AND STRESS IN THE COATING-SUBSTRATE SYSTEMS DURING SCRATCH TESTS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 262, Issue 4

Abstract

The paper presents the influence of external loads carried in contact load conditions caused by a diamond indenter during scratch testing on stress distribution in a coating-substrate. The maximum tensile stress concentrations that lead to coating fracture and the stresses that cause substrate yield were analysed. Analyses were based on numerical experiments using the finite element method. The analyses were carried out for systems with different material properties of coatings and substrates and with different geometries of contacting elements. The studies allowed the determination of the significant impact of substrate yield strength and coating thickness on stress distribution and deformations of the whole system. The results of numerical analysis were compared with the results of experimental tests for uncoated substrates – X5CrNi18-10 austenitic and X20Cr13 ferritic steels and with 1 and 2 μm thick ZrN coatings. As a result of this complex analysis, the level of stress that leads to coating fracture was determined.
