Flavonoid Extraction from Passiflora alata Dryander (Passifloraceae) - Using Factorial Design
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12
Abstract
This paper investigated the influence of different flavonoids extraction found in the powder of the aerial parts of Passiflora alata Dryander, using the factorial design as a statistical tool, enabling to assess and optimize the parameters involved, and compared to the method described in the Bristish Pharmacopoeia. A 2 3 factorial design analysis was applied to the extraction of flavonoid contents in the aerial parts of Passiflora alata Dryander. This paper determined the quantitative effects of changing from sonication to agitation, using 60% ethanol or water as solvent extractor, from 30 to 60 minutes extraction time. The thin layer chromatography and UV spectrophotometry methods were used to determine the flavonoid contents. The higher content of flavonoids was obtained by extraction in water under shaking for 30 minutes. These results suggest that flavonid contents in Passiflora alata are underestimated by the official method (British Pharmacopoeia 2000).
