Food and Religion: A Study on The Religious Symbolic Meanings of Food

Abstract

Food which is a physical necessity is an important element in the identification of individuals with the cultural and religious codes. It is shaped by spreading to all spheres of society. The meal provides food culture of the individuals with the religious symbolic meanings it carries. Moreover, the influence of religion on food is seen as the main role of drawing symbolic boundaries between different religious believers. Religion puts food at the beginning of the relationship of people with the world. In addition, food is transformed into a religious identity tool in the belief system and it is presented as a means of rewarding in the heaven promised to its believers. This study examines the influence of religion on the food cultures of individuals. In this study, the relationship between nutrition and religion and the belief system that emerged as a result of it has been discussed in specifics Islam.
