FOOT ARCH FORMATION IN CHILDREN DEPENDING ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. Movement is a biological need of every living organism. Lower physical activity is the one of negative factors related to civilization diseases including the disorders of foot architecture. The human foot is an important supporting and weight-bearing element, which constitutes a functional unity. The purpose of the study was evaluation of the changes in the shape of the longitudinal and transverse foot arches and the analysis of the individual segments of the foot, regarding their physical activity.Material and methods. The research involved 100 persons (54 girls, 46 boys), aged 9-10, from the Primary school in Tarnobrzeg, divided in two groups of 50 subjects: the first group participated in extracurricular sports, while the second group consisted of non-sport involved individuals. A photometric method was applied to assess the correctness of foot morphology. An individual assessment of the shape of the longitudinal and the transverse foot arch and toes was performed under two different statodynamic conditions. the statistic analysis included the mean values, standard deviation (SD) and t-Student test.Results. Analysis of the data shows that the morphological structure of the feet in the children who participated in sports differs from that of the feet of the non sport active children. Those differences include the correctness of foot segments shape.Conclusions. The values of Clarke's angles and the Wejsflog index were within acceptable limits. The study shows that the less physically active children more often have lower longitudinal and transverse foot arches.
