Free forearm flaps in reconstruction of extensive defects in the head and neck region

Abstract

Iatrogenic defects after resective surgery signifi cantly disturb the functioning of organs. Properly planned surgical procedure includes concurrent defects recons truction as well as preserves the acc ptable quality of life. Selection criteria include reconstruction techniques to achieve maximum functionality and aesthetics of the opera ted area. Based on the latest review available in the lite rature and our own experience the possibility for closure of defe cts with forearm free fl ap was presented. A group of patients wit h advanced oral cavity and pharynx cancer were treated with extensive surgical procedure.
