FREEDOM IN THE SOCIAL POETRY OF IVAN BAHRJANYJ AND GEORGE ORWELL
Journal Title: Наукові записки Національного університету "Острозька академія" Серія "Філологія" - Year 2016, Vol 63, Issue 63
Abstract
The article dwells on the transformation of the notions of freedom in the novels of Ivan Bahrjanyj and George Orwell. Both authors pay their attention to the problem of social and psychological dependence of a common person from the surrounding materialistic and ideologically biased world. Both writers prove that a person remains free as long as s/he keeps their inner freedom intact. At the same time there are some similarities and differences when defining main features of character of a «free person». For one thing George Orwell never portrays a perfect character. His leading character always suffers from the lack of freedom, either openly or implicitly. He is prone to ualitative changes, i.e. he reaches the status of a free person when fighting with both physical and mental obstacles and limitations. Each leading character of George Orwell is uniue in its own way, as s/he suffers from a different kind of liberty deprivation, but generally they are literary proofs that everyone can become free in a full sense of this word. On the contrary main characters of Ivan Bahrjanyj share same personal characteristics, they are close to real heroes, who can inspire readers, who prove that inner freedom is of a paramount importance for everyone, and who are sure that personal freedom should be gained only in tandem with national freedom.
