FREEZE-THAW RESISTANCE OF AIR-ENTRAINED HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE

Abstract

The paper presents the programme of research aimed at fi a recipe for high strength self-compacting and freeze-thaw resistant concrete. The programme included batching fi concrete mixtures with varied W/B ratios (0.28-0.36) and various contents of GGBS relative to the mass of cement (0-30% m.c.). The infl of W/B ratio and GGBS content on the strength, water absorption and freeze-thaw resistance of concrete was analysed. Since the combined action of various factors, i.e., a simultaneous use of superplasticizer, air entraining agent and slag, can impede the achievement of the air pore structure with desired parameters, an innovative method of concrete mixture air entrainment was applied. The method involves in- troducing into the mixture solid particles (microspheres) with specifi sizes that remain unchanged and stable over time. It follows from the results that it is possible to design and produce high strength, self-compacting and freeze-thaw resistant concrete with the use of locally available materials.
