Journal Title: Dicle Tıp Dergisi - Year 2012, Vol 39, Issue 2

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Helicobacter pylori in patients underwent endoscopy eastern Anatolia. Materials and methods: The patients whose endoscopic antral biopsies were taken for any reason in our endoscopy unit in February-June 2010 period were included and retrospectively investigated. The frequency of Helicobacter pylori was determined as separating the patients according to general, sex and the age groups. Antral biopsies were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and modified giemsa method and examined under light microscope and reported as (+) mild, (++) moderate, (+++) severe positive according to their intensities. Results: Biopsy specimens of 1298 patients were included into the study. The mean age was 47.5 ± 17.5 years (range 14-88) and 607 of these patients (47%) were male. Histopathological evaluation revealed that, 918 of the patients were (71%) positive and 379 (29%) were negative for Helicobacter pylori. Approximately 60% of our patients had mild, 29% had moderate and 11% had severe positivity for Helicobacter pylori. No significant difference was found in the frequency of Helicobacter pylori between women and men. The frequencies of Helicobacter pylori were 73.2%, 71.5%, 68.6% and 70.4%, respectively, in the age groups of 14-30 years, 31-45 years, 46-60 years and 61-88 years. Conclusion: The frequency of Helicobacter pylori was 71% in Eastern Anatolia Region. No statistically significant difference was found between genders and age groups in term of the frequency of Helicobacter pylori.
