From Consultation to Solidarity: Shūrā as an Activation Code of Individual and Social Potentials
Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 58, Issue 1
Abstract
Potentials Shūrā amounts to consulting someone else’s knowledge and experience in situations where it becomes challenging to find a solution to problems. It appears to be an active power in achieving “the right knowledge leading to the right act,” which is in a dormant state in both the individual and the society. Such a multifaceted concept of shūrā must be considered in connection with certain fundamental principles in the Qur’an such as tawhid, justice, trustworthiness, freedom and responsibility. The indispensability of shūrā can be based on the strong Qur’anic urge to implement it, the nature of man, and the social needs. Taken as such, it is not only a concept that works in the political arena, but it proves to be effective in almost every aspect of life. Here I attempt to show the key role that shūrā, when realized, can assume in finding out and resolving the problems of humanity in general and those of the Muslim part of the world in particular.
