From Halsted to breast conservative treatment or a brief history of breast cancer surgery

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Surgery plays the fundamental roel in the treatment. Surgical treatment of breast cancer has changed over the years. The main direction in the development of breast cancer surgery was to achieve radical and reducing invasiveness and ensure adequate quality of life of patients after surgery. The first radical mastectomy introduced by Halsted was life-saving surgery, but also mutilating. Currently, the standard treatment for patients in the first and second stage is conserving breast surgery. In the paper, different types of surgical treatment of breast cancer from Halsted radical mastectomy, through a Patey and Madden modified radical mastectomy way Patey, to conserving breast therapy (lumpectomy and quadrantectomy).
