FROM ROMANTICISM AND SYMBOLISM TO ACMEISM: THE EVOLUTION OF THE HERO-TRAVELER IN THE POETRY OF N. S. GUMILEV

Abstract

This article explores the aspects of a transition from Romanticism and Symbolism to Acmeism of philosophical and aesthetical thought of N. S. Gumilyov, a Russian Silver Age poet. One of the forms in which his artistic and literary views are implemented is the specifics of persona creation. It also proves the hypothesis that when the author creates a persona, the journey is a guiding story-forming theme. It is the journeyman who becomes his main lyrical character. Moreover, while describing the character’s wanderings it’s not the physical transposition that is important, but his spiritual dimension. Traditional for the European culture since the classical times – a motif of escape from civilization falls apart in Gumilyov’s poetry books («Romantic Flowers», «Pearls», «Alien Sky», «Quiver», «Bonfire», «Pillar of Fire») into multiple components. His journey means a search, a type of pilgrimage, exotic errantry, and not only a boundary intersection between different worlds attracting various dimensional locuses (Egypt, India, Africa, Italy, France, and Persia etc.) Motifs of journey, movement, and translocation define the ways of persona portrayal (appearing in multiple hypostases – as a Conquistador Warrior, a Minstrel, a Knight, a Pilgrim, a Seaman Philosopher, a Mage, a Ruler and others) that evolve in Gumilyov’s works from generic mythological perception of the world to symbolic and abstract categories and acmeistic declaration of interest to a specific item, thing, or object.
