FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF RELIGIOUS LANGUAGE IN CONTEMPORARY BRITISH PHILOSOPHY
Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Verification and falsifiable approaches advocated by the logical positivism, exhibit an attitude of insisting on the meaningless of religious language. Functionalist theory had been put forward based on Wittgenstein's second term philosophy. Many theists have seen usagebased theory of Wittgenstein promising to save the religion. But, attempts to interpret the language of religion on the basis of function were criticized for being reductionist. At the same time, this attitude has been evaluated by the theist philosophers as an approach which ignores the divine-metaphysical aspect.
