Functional impressions for lower complete dentures

Abstract
Recent publications confirm that despite huge improvements in dental care and prevention the number of edentulous patients decreases rather slowly and the need for complete dentures is still quite considerable. This situation is rather typical in economically underdeveloped countries. Latest developments in preventive care and implantology have led to significant decrease in the use of traditional complete dentures in rehabilitation of edentulous patients. This in turn has limited the teaching hours devoted to this problem in the undergraduate training. A complete denture is placed in a limited area of the oral cavity and should be fitted very precisely located in the space of the lost tissue, described as a neutral zone. If the tissue base is considerably resorbed it is particularly difficult to manufacture a properly functioning lower denture. The article presents certain anatomical details that can influence the stability and retention of such dentures and describes materials and methods used in the production of functional impressions. The methods used in procedures of fluid wax extensive impressions are also explained thoroughly and the simple method how to recreate the neutral zone was discussed as well.
