Functional Outcome Of Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Using Semi-Tendinosus Graft

Abstract

Introduction: Anterior cruciate ligament is a common occurrence these days due to increased participation in sports and vehicular accidents. The present study was carried out as with an aim to assess the functional results of anatomical reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament by re-creating the antero-medial and postero-lateral bundle of ACL using the semitendinosus tendon graft. Material and methods: The study was undertaken as a before-after intervention study among 20 patients with ACL injury from October 2014 to May 2016. Arthroscopic reconstruction of ACL was done with double bundle semitendinosus graft after which a 12 week rehabilitation program was administered to all the study participants. Post operatively the patients were evaluated both subjectively and objectively using Lyshoms score and knee stability physical examination tests. Statistical analysis: Continuous and categorical variables are expressed in terms of means and proportions. SPSS version 23.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Maximum of the study participants were in the age group of 26-30 years (47.1%) and majority of the study participants were males (70.6%). The overall post-surgical results were Good and Excellent in nearly 87% of the study participants. Good and excellent post op results were observed most frequently among patient who are young, who presented early for treatment and who had no associated injuries. Conclusion: Reconstruction of ACL with semitendinosus is associated with a significantly better outcome at two years in terms of Lysholm score and double bundle ACL reconstruction provides anterior and rotational stability.
