Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 6
Abstract
Background. The objective of the study was to assess the probability of obesity occurrence in adult subjects depending on gender, age, education, self-evaluation of one’s health and physical activity.Material and methods. 1080 subjects aged 38-78 years underwent the research in 2002 (parents of first year full time students at the AWFiS). Influence of gender, education, self-evaluation of health, calendar age, regular sports activities on the obesity occurrence was analyzed. Tests: Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, χ2 and logistic regression analysis were applied in the research (Statistika program).Results. According to the obtained results it can be claimed that in the research group male gender, elementary or basic vocational education, bad or average health state favor obesity. Also every next year of life increases this chance. The regression models indicate that men’s chances for obesity is six times bigger than women’s (OR=6.16); it is bigger for subjects with elementary or basic vocational education (OR=2.03) and evaluating their health state as bad or average (OR=1.89). Every next year of life increases this chance (OR=0.93).Differences between men and women regarding probability of obesity do not come from differences in physical activity but from the level of awareness connected with education and aging of an organism.Conclusions. Pro-health behaviors (including appropriate eating habits) and knowledge about reasons of obesity, its health consequences and possibilities to fight against it must be promoted particularly among men, older people and people of lower education.
