Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to determine the gender difference in levels of knowledge and practice of business ethics among traders in Katito market. The crossectional survey was carried out among 20 (40% of target population) traders in Katito market (Male=9, Female=11). The simple random sampling was used based on the number of stalls (N=50) in the market. Questionnaire with 10 items and reliability of 0.87 was administered to the traders within a period of 3 days. The data was then entered into SPSS in order to performance a t-test analysis of gender difference in levels of business ethics. The pre-stated null hypothesis (HO: there is no gender difference in levels of business ethics among the traders in Katito market) was tested at the significance level of 0.05. The results indicated that the male traders had higher knowledge of business ethics (mean=3.00) than their female counterparts (mean=2.72). They also understood the ethics more (mean=3.00) than the females (mean=2.72). Even though the males knew and understood the ethics, their score on the practice scale was still lower (mean=1.87) than females (mean=2.59). The t-test results further indicated the significance level for equal variances not assumed to be 0.020 less than the set alpha 0.05 hence the difference in the means was statistically significant. It was therefore concluded that female traders upheld business ethics more than male traders.
