GENETIC DETERMINANTS OF FENCING PERFORMANCE

Abstract

Fencing is an individual combat sport whose main premise can be defined as “to hit the opponent and avoid being hit”. Like in many combat sports, the result of a fencing bout depends on a variety of psychological, somatic, neural coordination and fitness factors. Traits determining fencing performance include reaction precision, tactical thinking, anticipation of opponent’s tactical actions as well as speed and power which depend on the phosphate anaerobic capacity level. The authors describe the physiological foundations, characterize physical efforts in fencing and discuss selected candidate genes that may possibly affect one’s predispositions to practice fencing: creatine kinase gene (CK), actinin gene (ACTN3), uncoupling proteins genes (UCP) and mitochondrial nadh dehydrogenase subunit 5 gene (mtnd5).
