Abstract

The development of the mass texts about Saint Hedwig of Silesia can be closed in three periods. The first period – from the canonization of Saint Hedwig to the implementation of the Trent Council reform, in which we can observe the process of gradual formation of liturgical texts about her, their development and penetration into the missals of Wroclaw, as well as expanding the range of worship, which finds its expression in the missals of Polish dioceses, and in those of the neighbouring countries. The second period – after the Council of Trent and the introduction of the Missal of Pius V in the individual dioceses, when the liturgical works in honour of Saint Hedwig were halted and reduced, and in Poland as well as in Silesia, a new set of missal texts about the Saint appeared in local additions to the Roman Missal. During this period, the cult of Saint Hedwig functioned locally for a time, but in the 18th century, the name of the Saint was entered in the universal calendar of the Church and the Roman Missal, which extended her worship to the whole Church, but did not result in the development of liturgical texts, which in the form indicated in the Missal promulgated by Pius V (with the amendments contained in patronals), lasted until Vatican II. The third period – after the Second Vatican Council, when as a result of a liturgical reform initiated by this Council, a new Roman Missal was released, with its later versions for German speaking countries and for Poland. In these liturgical books the rite of a mass about Saint Hedwig of Silesia received a new form.
