Geochemistry of Al Mahruqah Formation: A Case Study of Four Areas in the Northern Murzuq Basin, SW Libya

Journal Title: Libyan Journal of Engineering Science and Technology - Year 2024, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

In this work, major oxide data were used to evaluate the Al Mahruqah Formation. This study included four areas (Idri, Sabha, Al Fuqaha, and Tmassah sheets) in the northern Murzuq Basin, SW Libya. The findings indicated that the amounts of limestone and dolomite are comparable in the formation. The limestone and dolomite belong to distinct classes. There were multiple sources of the formation (Al2O3/TiO2 ratio ranges from 6.5 to 99). These sources are most likely the felsic, intermediate, and mafic rocks in the Al Haruj Al Abyad Sheet. The intensity of paleoweathering is clearly variable in the source area (RR, CIA, CIW, PIA, and CIW´ values range from 0.4 to 39.61, 40.7 to 92.5%, 45.45 to 97.74%, 38.21 to 97.6%, and 62.5 to 98.85%, respectively). The climatic parameters (temperature, Ti/Al, Mg/Al, and Fe/Al values range from 8.4 to 37.41°C, 0.01 to 0.17, 0.33 to 42.85, and 0.08 to 4.33, respectively) indicated that there were periods of humidity and aridity. Maturity characterizes the majority of the sediments (ICV>1). This study disproves some latest research by demonstrating that the Al Mahruqah Formation was deposited in a deep marine environment (based on the plots of Fe+Ca versus Ca and Ca versus Fe) with suboxic conditions (Mn* values range from −0.46 to 1.63). The paleoproductivity was subject to considerable variation (P/Ti ratio ranges from 0.05 to 1.47). The sediments dominantly belong to active and passive continental margins.
