GEOGRAPHICAL PECULIARITIES OF KYIV city DEVELOPMENT PLANNING AT THE PRESENT STAGE

Abstract

The main aspects of Kyiv architectural and planning development during the twentieth century are described. Peculiarities of the general plans of Kyiv of different periods: 1938, 1949, 1967, 1985, 2002 and 2015, are considered. The main population growth in Kyiv took place between 1959 and 1979, when a large number of industrial enterprises were predominantly located in the city. The positive and negative features of the last General Plan of 2015 are investigated. The main geographical features of the development of Kyiv at the present stage are ascertained: the development of Kyiv as a European center, the use of urban territorial resources, and the development of Kyiv and its suburban areas. The development of Kiev City is considered in close connection with the development of the Kiev Agglomeration. A comparative analysis of the Kyiv, Berlin and Paris urban agglomerations has been carried out. In the structure of agglomerations, the author distinguishes the territory of a center-city and the territory of a suburban area. The ratio of the population of the center-city and suburban area for the Kyiv agglomeration is 3: 1, Berlin – 8: 1, and Paris – 1: 4. The Paris model itself should be laid down to the basis for the further Kiev agglomeration development. This, in particular, stipulates stabilizing of Kyiv population and increasing of the suburban zone population to the level. In addition, it is necessary to improve the system-forming role of cities which are in the immediate proximity to the Kyiv agglomeration, at a distance of 130-200 km from the Capital City, and may stand for certain counterweights to Kyiv: Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Bila Tserkva, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy.
