GEOMETRIC FACTOR IN SEASONAL VARIATIONS OF DAILY AVERAGE VALUES OF THE GEOMAGNETIC INDEX Dₛₜ
Journal Title: Solar-Terrestrial Physics - Year 2020, Vol 6, Issue 4
Abstract
The work uses data on the geomagnetic index Dst for the period 1966–2015. Under quiet conditions, the occurrence of seasonal variations of the daily average Dst index depends on geometric factors of the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere; and under disturbed conditions, on the development of a partial ring current in the magnetosphere. At large negative values of the Dst index, there is no seasonal variation in it. The imperfection of the network of Dst stations is assumed to lead to the formation of annual variation in Dst. The formation of a semiannual variation is associated with the movement of the plasma sheet relative to the plane of the geomagnetic equator during the annual rotation of Earth around the Sun. Based on the data on semiannual variations in the number of days n(Dst), the critical daily average value of the geomagnetic index Dst is determined, starting from which we can speak of disturbed days: Dst≤–24 nT.

INFLUENCE OF STRONG SOLAR PROTON EVENTS ON PROPAGATION OF RADIO SIGNALS IN THE VLF RANGE IN A HIGH-LATITUDE REGION
In this paper, we examine the features of RSDN-20 signal propagation in a high-latitude Earth–ionosphere waveguide during solar proton events, using computational experiment methods. We have analyzed two proton ground-le...
GLOBAL DISTURBANCE OF EARTH’S MAGNETOSPHERE AND ITS CONNECTION WITH SPACE WEATHER
This paper deals with extreme conditions of the global magnetosphere disturbance: very quiet and greatly disturbed, and their relationship with interplanetary medium parameters. The degree of global magnetosphere disturb...
ELECTROMAGNETIC ULF/ELF OSCILLATIONS CAUSED BY THE ERUPTION OF THE TONGA VOLCANO
The eruption of the Tonga volcano on January 13 and 15, 2022 and related intense lightning activity led to the excitation of a number of specific electromagnetic oscillations in different frequency ranges. We examine pro...
VARIATIONS OF FLOW DIRECTION IN SOLAR WIND STREAMS OF DIFFERENT TYPES
Studying the direction of the solar wind flow is a topical problem of space weather forecasting. As a rule, the quiet and uniform solar wind propagates radially, but significant changes in the solar wind flow direction c...
FEATURES OF SHORT-PERIOD VARIABILITY OF TOTAL ELECTRON CONTENT AT HIGH AND MIDDLE LATITUDES
The study presents the results of comparative analysis of features of a short-period (with periods of internal gravity waves) variability of total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere at middle (Novosibirsk) and high...
