Geotechnical factors for foundation design by considering axial loading

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 5

Abstract

Allowable stress design (ASD) methods have been used for designing foundations and other geotechnical applications. The geotechnical resistance of a pile arises as a combination of side friction, where load is transmitted to the soil through friction along the sides of the pile, and end bearing, where load is transmitted to the soil (or rock) through the tip of the pile. This paper first reviews the historical development of the resistance factors for the geotechnical foundation design and recommends how to specifically implement recent developments in resistance factors for geotechnical foundation design. Then it proposes a new approach for the ultimate limit state punching shear failure of deep foundations using Load and Resistance Factor Design provisions. Simulation shows that the analytical results are validated.
