Gifted people with disabilities – A challenge for special education

Journal Title: Men Disability Society - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 20

Abstract

In the literature in the field of special education, the specificity of the development and functioningof people with disabilities is usually presented in the context of their defects and disorders.People with both deficits and special gifts constitute a specific, although small, group in the populationof people with disabilities. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences illustrates thecomplexity of the intellectual potential of individuals, including those with disabilities. This particular academic interest in gifted students with disabilities developed when the ideaof integrated education was introduced into schools. Educational support for these students, however, poses new challenges for schools related to the identification and diagnosis of these individuals,as well as to the adaptation of appropriate teaching methods and strategies to their specificlimitations and gifts. The article provides a brief description of various groups of gifted students with disabilitiesand highlights both positive and negative aspects of the special combination of their limitationsand gifts. It also points to difficulties concerning the process of identifying this group ofstudents and their diagnosis, and to selected forms of their educational support.
