“GIS data standard for environmental protection” as applied in the development of protection plan drafts for “Natura 2000” marine protected areas

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 2016, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

Spatial databases constitute an essential part of scientific and research studies. As they enable gathered information to be ascribed to a specific geographical location, they contribute to the development of the knowledge base, as well as offering the opportunity to integrate it quickly with other datasets. The aim of this article is to present how a model for a spatial database was created in the process of drafting plans for the “Natura 2000” marine areas, basing on the GIS data standard for environmental protection developed in 2009. The paper specifies the problems which hindered its implementation, and the solutions which enabled the development of an aquatic ecosystem inventory within the scope set out in protection plans. The article also emphasises the need to apply a unified standard in environmental studies, and the necessity to refine and update it.
