Glass polychrome vessels from Olbia

Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 4

Abstract

The article is devoted to the introduction to scientific circulation the unpublished materials and findings of glass vessels fabricated from multicoloured glass, which were found during the recent excavations in Olbia. Moreover, the already published items from polychrome glass stored in various museums were systematized. In the I cent. BC – I cent. AD different techniques of glassware manufacturing were used to imitate products made of precious and semiprecious stones. In Olbia were found vials, cups, and plates made in the technique of «millefiori». Alabaster and flask were produced in techniques of mosaic and «Goldbandglas». In the I cent. AD for decoration of perfume vessels was used the technique of «motley surface», with assistance of which the surface of the blowed vessels was decorated with mottled patterns. The modiolus found in 1965 in the necropolis of Olbia was ornamented with the aid of the mentioned technique. Vessels, that simulate products made of precious and semiprecious stones, were imported to Olbia in the I cent. BC – I cent. AD from different centers of the Roman Empire.
