Abstract

Concentration of stresses and deformations occurs in bearing members of massive structures, distribution units. In such cases, external load is transferred by small areas. As building materials of greater strength come into use and clear spans in building structures are increasing, concentration of stresses and deformations is increasing as well. Characteristically, it comprises intensive compressive stresses as well as considerable tensile and circumferential stresses. Concentration of stresses is one of the factors affecting strength, rigidity, reliability and durability of constructions. Methods of calculating the strength of brittle materials are presented in the article. The methods are based on experimental and theoretical research. The research shows that under loaded area, the intensity of normal compressive stresses increases. The increase of stresses causes concrete ramming (consolidation) and under loaded area a breaking cone forms. The cone splits the member in vertical sections. When the member is exposed to bearing stress, the material lying near the loaded area surrounds and compresses the breaking cone thus increasing the resistance of loaded area to compression. The casing fails when maximal tensile stresses in it reach the strength of material under tensioning. By methods presented here, failure of material in members exposed to bearing stress as well as the influence of the casing are established according to strength theories. The methods applied enable to evaluate not only dimensions of the member but also physical and mechanical properties of materials. Design specifications evaluate both section characteristics and strength of materials under tension and compression.
