Journal Title: International Journal of Ayurveda & Alternative Medicine - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 3

Abstract

Ayurvedic medical science is the oldest & eternal science of life with one of its peculiarity in its drug manufacturing. In this context the term GMPs is ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ which means the rules for quality, safety & efficacy of these medicines. Ayurveda, the eternal life science has a vast heritage of this knowledge and preserved it in the form of documentation in various scriptures. The WHO Assembly in a number of resolutions emphasized the need to ensure quality control of medicinal plants by using modern techniques & applying suitable standards. Standardization problem arises from the complex composition of drugs which are used in the form of whole plant, parts of the plant & plant extracts. The purpose of standardizing traditional remedies is obviously to ensure therapeutic efficacy. Quality assurance of these traditional remedies relies upon GMPs with adequate batch analysis & standardized methods of preparation (SOPs). To overcome these problems the Govt. Of India has issued a Gazette notification of GMP on 23-06-2000 wherein aspects of quality control find an important place in ensuring the quality of products. GMP is that part of quality assurance which ensures that products are consistently produced & controlled to the quality standards appropriate to their intended use and as required by the marketing authorization. Quality assurance is a wide ranging concept covering all matters that individually or collectively influence the quality of a product. GMP covers almost all aspects of drug manufacturing right from procurement of raw materials – its processing (SOP) – quality control - packaging & lebelling & lastly dispatch. The present article is an effort to explore these GMPs making use of Ayurvedic components spread out through various Rasashastra reference books i.e. Rasa Granthas.
