Therefore, it is important to make diabetes prevention a priority, especially for them who are at increased risk of diabetes. When we review the classical Ayurvedic texts, we found many similarities between DM and madhumeha. Madhumeha is the advanced stage of prameha. Prameha is a disease in which patient passes urine frequently and the same is main symptom of diabetes mellitus. Thus, Diabetes mellitus can be equated with madhumeha. Diabetes mellitus is a perfect example of life style disorders. Sedentary life style, faulty dietary habits and stressful mental conditions are considered as the main causes of life style disorders including DM. There are so many drugs available in modern sciences for treatment of diabetes but all comes with serious and long term side effects. So, this is better to prevent DM by alternative methods. Ayurvedic literature contains a treasure of knowledge about causes, risk factors, prevention and treatment of madhumeha.
