GRATITUDE SPEECH ACT FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF ITS SINCERITY

Abstract

The article deals with the criterion of sincerity in gratitude speech act. According to the criterion of sincerity, gratitude has been identified as phatic, sincere (or behabitive) and insincere. The article also dwells on the pragmatic situations of phatic, sincere (behabitive) and insincere gratitude utterances realization. The research has been carried out on the basis of 1400 utterances of gratitude taken from 25 English novels. The criterion of sincerity determines the functioning of expressive speech acts such as gratitude. It identifies the psychological state of a person in a particular situation. Applying the criterion of sincerity to our data has been helpful to distinguish phatic, sincere (or behabitive) and insincere gratitude. Phatic gratitude is the part of the social ritual, which performs the function of harmonious communication between communicants. The speaker expresses such kind of gratitude after receiving insignificant services, invitations, congratulations, compliments, praise, etc. Phatic gratitude serves as a marker of polite behavior. Sincere (or behabitive) gratitude is a positive emotional feeling expressed by the addresser for the received favour. In speech, it is realized either by standard gratitude cliché or by positive evaluative speech acts. The choice between phatic and behabitive gratitude depends on how valuable the actions of the addressee are for the speaker. Insincere gratitude is observed in cases when the addresser does not feel gratitude or in cases of ironic / sarcastic gratitude. The form of insincere gratitude remains the same, but the extralinguistic situation and the author’s words reveal its true pragmatic meaning.
