Guanidine-reactive agent phenylglyoxal induces DNA damage and cancer cell death.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2012, Vol 64, Issue 6
Abstract
DNA-damaging compounds (e.g., alkylating agents, cytotoxic antibiotics and DNA topoisomerase poisons) are themost widely used anticancer drugs. The inability of tumor cells to properly repair some types of DNA damage may explain why specific DNA-damaging drugs can selectively kill tumor cells. Phenylglyoxal is a dicarbonyl compound known to react with guanidine groups such as that of the DNA base guanine, therefore suggesting that phenylglyoxal could induce DNA damage and have anticancer activity.

Different effects of postnatal caffeine treatment on two pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure models persist into adulthood.
Postnatal treatment with caffeine from P7 to P11 (10 or 20 mg/kg daily) resulted in transient changes in two pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced models of epileptic seizures characterized by spike-and-wave EEG rhythm in imm...
L-carnitine inhibits ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats.
L-carnitine is a quaternary amine that is essential for the normal oxidation of long-chain fatty acids by mitochondria. It is known that L-carnitine and its derivatives prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species, s...
Participation of adenosine system in the ketamine-induced motor activity in mice.
The influence of adenosine receptor ligands on ketamine-induced locomotor activity was studied in mice. Ketamine-induced hyperactivity (10 mg/kg) was significantly and dose-dependently attenuated by CGS 21680 (selective...
Oral administration of lithium increases tissue magnesium contents but not plasma magnesium level in rats.
The aim of this work was to determine the influence of different doses of lithium on magnesium concentration in plasma and tissues of rats. For a period of eight weeks rats had been provided with aqueous solutions of Li(...
Analgesia and serum assays of controlled-release dihydrocodeine and metabolites in cancer patients with pain.
Aim of the study was to assess dihydrocodeine (DHC) and metabolites concentrations and their correlations with DHC analgesia in cancer patients with pain. Thirty opioid-naive patients with nociceptive pain intensity asse...
