Guidelines for easier communication between a physician and disabled patients

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 8

Abstract

Introduction: The ability to communicate with other people is the main means of exchanging information and is, therefore, one of the basic determinants of mental development. Many disabled patients find it difficult to describe their afflictions or needs. This creates a challenge for the clinician.Aim of the study: To describe activities and behaviour that facilitate communication between the physician and a disabled patient, an arduous task in cases of dental treatment. Conclusion: There is a need for training, both pre- and post-graduate, run by experienced psychologists and clinicians, that would include theoretical and practical training in communicating with patients whose mental abilities are impaired.
