Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of solar control strategies in architecture on daylight performance in buildings and visual comfort conditions. It is well known that office buildings are of the building typologies where daylighting is used for obtaining required visual comfort conditions and providing lighting energy efficiency. Control of excessive amount of sunlight in office buildings is supplied by the use of solar control strategies. In this study, diverse solar control strategies are developed for a sample office space in Istanbul conditions and obtained scenarios are assessed considering their visual comfort conditions and daylight performance. In order to estimate the daylighting potential of the investigated space with different solar control scenarios, evaluated scenarios are modelled by the use of a validated lighting simulation program and Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI) methodology is used owing to its determination criteria for daylight level classifications in offices. EN 12464: Light and Lighting of Workplaces: Part1-Indoor Workplaces standard is considered for required maintained illuminance criteria in office buildings. Results of this study show the significance of using solar control strategies in office buildings in terms of daylight performance and visual comfort conditions.
