Journal Title: Історико-культурні студії - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

The article researched the complete secondary education of Yevhen Konovalets. It was explored that he raised the universal values, skills and abilities of the subjects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and what else formed the national identity. We received an educational portrait of E. Konovalets, which is typical for almost everyone who influenced and determined with him historical processes in the Ukrainian lands in the 1910s–1930s. Especially when it comes to the link of secondary education - the gymnasium, as well as with the Ukrainian language of instruction. After all, the opportunity to obtain high-quality secondary education in their native language in Galicia was received by the young people thanks to the hard work of the Ukrainian public-political elite in conditions of domination at all levels of the Polish political factor in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria with the Grand Duchy of Cracow of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This well understood a significant part of Ukrainian society, and accordingly: first, it affected the increase in the number of students in the existing Ukrainian gymnasies, as well as the opening of new, mostly private ones; second, the political plane in which the Ukrainian school was located, forced to provide high quality education; thirdly, the Ukrainian school provided not only education, the content of which was the same as in the Polish, German and Jewish schools of Galicia, but thanks to a professional and nationally-educated teaching staff and national education. The basis of national education was the fact that the Ukrainian language studied native language and culture, subjects of the mathematical and natural cycle, as well as Polish and German language, history and culture, European and world-wide. The Ukrainian language provided for the development of universal values, peculiarities and regularities of cultural-historical processes, just as it was implemented in Polish, German or in some other language. Therefore, many will continue to form opposition, a desire to defend and fight against all those who will humiliate, restrict, ban the manifestations of national life, development and self-affirmation until autonomy or independence.
