HAB-PLOT AS THE MAIN UNIT OF LAKES HYDROMORPHOLOGICAL MONITORING

Abstract
The overall aim of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is for Member States of European Union to prevent deterioration of the status of all surface water bodies and to achieve «good ecological status» and «good surface water chemical status». The ecological classification system, required under the WFD, describes hydromorphological elements as «supporting the biological elements». The purpose of research is to determine the Hab-plots and its structural elements as the main unit of lakes hydromorphological monitoring and to describe the main hydromorphological features that should be assessed within the Hab-plots for the purpose of lake management and restoration. The general methodology of the field survey of lake hydromorphological monitoring includes the recording of the lake characteristics in certain points – Hab-plots. Within the Hab-plot are defined three zones: riparian zone, shore zone and littoral zone.
