Abstract

Determination of the sahâba generation has great importance in narrative sciences. Because one of the authenticity conditions of the hadiths, the second source of Islam after the Holy Qur’an, is contiguous of their documents. Because of their being the first generation that transmit hadiths, determination of the sahaba becomes necessary. For this purpose, there are plenty of bibliographical works about sahaba. Halifa b. Hayyat’s (d. 240/854-55) books called Tabakat and Tarikh are same kind of works. Halifa b. Hayyat is a scholarly authority in many fields of Islamic sciences like history, hadith and genealogy. Some of the people Hayyât regarded as a sahaba in these works are not exist in the Ibn Hajer’s work called al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba, which is accepted as the most comprehensive work on the bibliography of sahaba. This article aims to identify the persons who Hayyât mentions as sahaba, but are not refarded as sahaba in the other historical sources. This article also tries to reveal why Hayyat accepts these persons as sahaba.
