Abstract
This work called “Religion and Secularization: The Case of Northern Cyprus”, is an example of a local sociology study; and, by this, has been an achievement for the literature of sociology of religion. Aydınalp, who studied the case of Northern Cyprus from past to present with a historical perspective, tries to explain the changes in the religious life of the Cypriot people and the relationship between religion and secularization in the axis of related paradigms. After embracing the definitions of religion in detail, he brings secularization paradigms into question and continues with the discussions on the subject under the title of “Sociology of Secularization in Turkey”. In this section, while trying to understand the changes in our own religious life, there is some more local content that has been meant by using of ‘secularization’; and this local understanding of the notion stands as one of the most important points of the study. In following sections, by pointing out the difference between the individualism/individuality as a gaining of Modern world and its projection in our society; thereby pointing out the difference from the West, Aydınalp introduces a new concept: ‘autonomous secularizations’ as a better explaining ground for our situation. Thus, by introducing this new notion, it can be noticed that, there is an attempt of explaining our own sociological problems with our own notions. In the case study of the research, on the other hand, besides the methodology of direct observation, survey and interview, the phenomenological approach is also used, which means Aydınalp benefits from methodological variety. Thus, by doing so, it becomes possible to get more concrete and valid results from the data set for his study.
