Health Determinants: Essence аnd Systematization

Abstract
In recent decades most indexes of Ukraine’s population health state and dynamics are substantially inferior to European ones, alongside with the average world indexes. Under such circumstances the Ukrainian health care system needs transformation. It should be based on fundamentally new interpretation of cause-effect connections between environment (social and physical) and population health, forming qualitatively new approaches to health care at both individual and population ( national, regional) levels. It must be based on understating of health determinants, their study and analysis depending on demographic, social, economic, ecological and other criteria. Нealth determinants can be divided into three levels. The first, contextual, determinants of which determine the characteristics of other determinants’ levels. Global, social and political determinants belong to this level (democracy, political situation, corruption, government effectiveness). Contextual determinants explained by peculiarities of health in population groups: territorial, demographic, social, ethnic, etc. Proximal determinants are at individual specifics of health. Both levels are characterized by common and divergent determinant groups. Social, economic, cultural and ecological groups constitute common ones. The mechanism of their action on the structural and proximal level is different.
