Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 12
Abstract
Background & Aim: Myocardial Infarction (MI) is one of the major global causes of death and disability. Thus, prevention and control of the disease may vastly help public maintain their health and lower imposed costs. The aim of the present study was to assess HEI and some of the influential factors among individuals with recently diagnosed MI and compare these with healthy individuals in Mazandaran province, Iran. Methods:A case-control study was implemented between 2013 and 2014, on 100 patients (male and female) diagnosed with first-time MI who were hospitalized in heart specialty hospitals of Amol, Babol and Sari (three cities of Mazandaran province) and 100 adjusted (for age, gender and place of birth) healthy controls. HEI and anthropometric data were measured using food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and standard methods, respectively. Data were then analyzed using Chi-square and independent t-test. Results: Mean score of HEI was higher for healthy controls than cases (p<0.001). A positive, significant correlation were observed between the number of servings consumed from vegetables, fruits, dairy, meats as well as dietary diversity score (DDS) with HEI score for both groups. Further, a significant association were observed between smoking, hypertension, family history of MI, education level and low economic status with MI incidence. Conclusion: Unhealthy eating pattern may increase risk of MI. On the other hand, education and low economic status are among risk factors of MI in Mazandaran province.
