Helicobacter pylori infection in children and their appetite, according to parents’ estimation
Journal Title: Pediatria Współczesna. Gastroenterologia, Hepatologia i Żywienie Dziecka - Year 2011, Vol 13, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction: The infection of Helicobacter pylori affects the extraction of ghrelin and leptine by gastric mucosa, which are of great importance for the regulation of appetite. Aim of the study: The main object of this study is to examine parents’ opinion on the appetite of children who suffer from gastritis of Helicobacter pylori origin. Material and methods: 174 children, aged 4-18 years, were examinated by gastrofiberoscopy because of clinical reasons. The infection of Helicobacter pylori was recognized in the group of 43 children (group I), but this infection was excluded in the group of 131 children (group II). Basing on histo-pathological examination, group II was divided into two subgroups: IIA – 33 children without histologic changes of gastric mucosa and IIB – 98 children with the diagnosis of gastritis. The parents assessed children’s appetite using a 4-point scale, they defined the time of good and bad appetite during the day and described the number of meals usually eaten by their children. Data were analyzed using χ2 test. Results: The following results point at the negative influence of H. pylori infection on the children’s appetite: good appetite present remarkably more often in group II (p=0,009), and also in the subgroup IIA and IIB in comparison with the group I (p <0,05; p <0,005). It is also important that in both groups (I and II) the appetite was more frequently described as very good than bad (p <0,001). Conclusions: The parents’ estimation of the appetite of their children with gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection does not allow unequivocally to describe the role of this infection in the regulation of children’s appetite. However, it can suggest its negative influence on the appetite.
