Abstract
One of the people who shaped the scientific life in the Enlightenment Gdansk was a teacher and mathematician Henryk (Heinrich) Kühn (1690-1769). Initially, he was associated with Königsberg, but in 1733 he took a job at the department of mathematics in Gdańsk Academic Gymnasium. During the lectures, he paid particular attention to the possibility of understanding and explanation of all processes through science. He participated in the reformation of the Gdańsk Gymnasium. He was also active scientifically: he was the first in the world to have attempted a geometric interpretation of complex numbers, and also dealt with maritime subjects. He popularized knowledge in the pages of his calendars.
