Abstract

Lithuania is a unique country in terms of the size of the network of schools which offer Polish as a language of instruction in a foreign country. The Lithuanian authorities, both communist and independent, have legally accepted Polish education in the country; however, they have been and still are unfavorable to its existence. In the second half of the 20th century, Polish education struggled against Russification, and also Lithuanization (the struggle against which continues nowadays). Today’s intensive indoctrination to Lithuanian school causes the child to be ashamed of the Polishness, of being a Pole. Lack of students at school means its’ inevitable liquidation, and the lack of schools will result in the gradual extinction of the Polishness of Vilinus region.
