Abstract
The subject of the analyzes undertaken in this article are source materials concerning educational establishments for Polish girls in West Prussia in the mid-nineteenth century. The purpose of this article is to show the development and operation of these institutions and to present the curricula implemented in them and the role they were to fulfill. The presented research results were based on a critical analysis of press and memoir sources from the 19th century as well as works published in the first half of the 20th century. In Western Prussia in the mid-nineteenth century, despite the dominance of the German element, there were Polish educational establishments for girls, implementing plans and educational programs, including teaching Polish and Polish history. Although there were few such institutions, those which existed, they have been positively recorded in the history of Polish education in the discussed region. Their activities served both moral upbringing and intellectual education of girls, as well as maintaining national identity of Polish women. Although in relation to the analyzed period, one can not talk that women had the same educational opportunities like men, the problem of girls' education was important for the Polish intellectual elites in West Prussia. However, it is true, that Polish elites did not see the need to emancipate women. Teaching and upbringing of girls was perceived through the prism of national interest. Education of Polish women served to maintain and develop Polish identity and also to prepare them for being a good and wise mother, wife and hostess.
