Abstract

Polish Teachers Association in Great Britain came into existence in 1941. Its ranks embraced Polish teachers working for Polish education on the British Isles, in the Middle East and in Africa. The association made it their objective to learn the theoretical and practical achievements of the Anglo-Saxon education (primarily British), organize pedagogic courses for teachers, give teachers financial help, participate in work on the concept of reconstructing and reforming the Polish educational system and prepare for an organized return to the country after the end of the war. The Association was also interested in the living conditions and secret teaching of teachers in the occupied country. Towards the end of the war the Association took considerable measures in order to help its members and all teachers in exile to return to independent Poland. The fact that Poland found itself in the zone of USSR dominance stopped a vast majority of pedagogic staff from returning to their homeland. In that situation the Association decided to continue its activity in exile and take care of the teachers, pupils and Polish educational institutions that remained outside the homeland.
