HEZLİYÂT OF NEV‘Î-ZÂDE ATÂYÎ

Abstract

Satire, waggery, burlesque, lampoon and leg-pul are some of the genres of Turkish Literature whose subjects are close to one another. Among all these, burlesque is a poery genre which discusses some serious and important ideas and matters in a humorous and unserious way. Some divan literatüre artists gathered the poems that have the characteristics of burlesque in a seperate journal independently of their divans. These journals that are generally small in volume are called Hezliyât. One of the divan poets of the 17th century, Nev‘î-zâde Atâyî is among the artists that has a Hezliyât. The Hezliyat of Nev‘î-zâde is comprised of 149 poems. 131 of these poems are matla, 11 of them are kıta, 3 of them are rubaie , 1 of them is mesnevi and the last 1 of them is terkib-bent. Even if some of them include some vulgar statements, the principal literary rules such as meter, rhyme and figures of speech were obeyed while writing. There are several copies of Hezliyâtin various libraries and generally take place at the end of the writings that comprise the oeuvre or Hamse of the Divan of Atâyî. This study consists of one introduction and three other chapters. In the introductory chapter, the dictionary meanings of the words satire and burlesque were discussed, the chronological development of the genre ‘burlesque’ in Turkish, Arabic and Persian Literature was shown. In the first part of the first chapter, the figure of the work was analyzed while the content factors were analyzed in the second part; the results that were attained were presented with the help of several tables. The results that were acquired during the study were indicated in the second chapter. The copy definitions ofHezliyâtwas made in the last part of the study and the factors that were paid attention during the comprise of the text were lined and the criticized text that was comprised as a result of its comparison with the three copies of Hezliyât by Nev‘î-zâde Atâyi.
