THE FACTORS THAT RELATED TO DECIDE TO SEPARATE IN WOMEN WHO HAS BEEN EXPOSED PHYSICAL VIOLENCE BY THEIR HUSBANDS

Abstract

For a woman who has been exposed to physical violence in her marriage, it is not an easy decision to separate from her husband. In spite of the hard marital conditions, she may not choose to end her marriage due to many probable disadvantages following the separation period. Purpose: The aim of this research is examined what is probability women who exposed physical violence by their husbands are situated in one of the categories related to the end of marriage and the ongoing of marriage Method: The data was collected from 206 women who were at least 18 years old and exposed to violence in their marriages; 78 of whom have ended their disruptive marriages at least 6 months ago, and 134 of whom have been continuing their marriages. They were given a demographical information form which asked about their educational level, marriage duration, the presence of children, number of children, intensity of physical violence and job status during their marriages. Their experience of marital violence was examined through the questions that whether they got social support from someone to cope with the difficulties, whether their children were exposed to physical violence, whether they have got psychological support, whether they were exposed to physical violence in the family in which they grew up,and whether they were being threatened by their husbands when they have decided to break up. As in line with the aim of current study, Resilience Scale for Adults was also given to the participants. The data was analyzed through univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The interaction effect of the women’s job status, the presence of children in the marriage and the threat perception was found to be statistically significant in the prediction of the decision to end the marriage. Discussion: The findings were discussed within the framework of related literature.
